We’re not a government body — registration is voluntary and not a legal requirement. But a QR-linked ID card, NFC tag and online profile are what café owners, landlords and taxi drivers actually respond to. Most handlers tell us the arguments stopped the day their kit arrived.

Excellent, thank you.

I have received my lifelong package and am really delighted with the contents. The ID cards are brilliant and I love the option to use the QR code to access the database with information about me and my dog. This will be super helpful if anyone needs further verification of my dog's role. Communication with the company has been excellent. A great service. Thank you.

Easy to upload photos and information…

Easy to upload photos and information required. All info that I required was given. Even though the cards etc aren't a legal requirement, it's amazing how much easier it is to go in shops, hospitals etc. Just need to educate the odd ignorant person, the cards help with this — also order the card that explains the law on service dogs. Recommend this to anyone that asks how I got him registered.

★★★★★

Supportive and responsive

Very clear website, easy to understand all elements. Application process very straightforward and response is very prompt. It would be ideal if the vests for the dogs were of a breathable mesh-type rather than full nylon; it's been very warm today and the dogs don't need an unventilated vest in this heat. Not a criticism, just a constructive suggestion!

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about registration, your UK rights, and how the Assistance Dog Registry works.

About What is the Assistance Dog Registry?
The Assistance Dog Registry is a platform where you can voluntarily register your assistance dog. It provides quick access to essential information about your dog and helps ensure they are recognized as a service animal when in public spaces.
Legal Is it legally required to register my assistance dog?
No, registering your assistance dog is not a legal requirement in the UK. However, registering your dog can provide additional benefits like quick access to important information, easy identification, and recovery if your dog is lost.
About What are the benefits of registering my assistance dog?
By registering your dog, you get access to features like easy identification through QR codes, assistance in finding your dog if they are lost, and immediate access to vital information such as your dog’s medical needs or training history.
Training Can I train my own assistance dog?
Yes, in the UK, owners are allowed to train their own assistance dogs. There is no requirement for the dog to be trained by a formal institution, but the dog should be well-behaved and capable of performing tasks that mitigate the handler’s disability.
Legal What are my rights with my assistance dog under UK law?
Under the Equality Act 2010, assistance dog owners are legally protected to access public places and services without discrimination. This means that businesses and service providers must allow access to assistance dogs, whether they are professionally trained or owner-trained. The law classifies assistance dogs as “auxiliary aids” and denies service only in exceptional circumstances. If a business refuses entry to you and your assistance dog, it is likely unlawful discrimination. Our Assistance Dog Registry provides an ID card and NFC-enabled tags that can help communicate your rights and your dog’s status effectively.
Training What qualifies a dog as an assistance dog?
In the UK, an assistance dog is a trained companion that helps people who need support with daily activities due to mobility challenges or other conditions, improving their quality of life. Dogs that qualify as assistance dogs typically have specialised training to support different needs — guiding, alerting and assisting with tasks. While professional training can be helpful, owners can train their own assistance dogs, provided they meet the necessary behaviour and service standards to ensure public safety.
Training What conditions qualify for an assistance dog?
Assistance dogs can provide valuable support for people in many different situations, such as helping with mobility, guiding, alerting, or offering task-based assistance in daily life. We welcome registrations from owners whose dogs are trained to carry out specific tasks that help their handler in practical, everyday ways.
Practical How do I prove my dog is an assistance dog in the UK?
You can register your dog with us and receive an ID card and supporting materials that help demonstrate your dog’s status as a trained assistance dog. This documentation is helpful when entering public spaces. Many handlers find it useful to also carry a copy of the Equality Act 2010 access-rights summary to clarify their rights and avoid misunderstandings.
Legal Do I need to register my assistance dog for legal protection?
No. In the UK, assistance dogs are legally protected under the Equality Act 2010 regardless of how they are trained. “Service dog” is the U.S. term for the same type of working dog. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) do not have the same legal access rights in the UK.
About Is an Assistance Dog the same as a Service Dog or comfort Animal?
No — “assistance dog” is the UK term, “service dog” is the U.S. equivalent. Assistance dog handlers are protected under the Equality Act 2010 if their dog is trained to perform tasks related to their disability. Comfort animals / Emotional Support Animals are a separate category and do not carry the same UK access rights.
Practical What should I do if a business or landlord refuses access to my assistance dog?
Under the Equality Act 2010 businesses and landlords must make reasonable adjustments to allow access for assistance dogs. If you’re refused entry: politely remind them of their obligations under the Act, share the Equality and Human Rights Commission guidance on assistance dog access rights, and if necessary submit a complaint to the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
Legal Are there any official UK certification bodies for assistance dogs?
No single body. ADUK (Assistance Dogs UK) is a recognized coalition but it is not the only valid organization. Owner-trained assistance dogs have the same legal rights as those trained by an organization.
Legal Can councils demand proof of registration for an assistance dog?
No — councils cannot legally require registration. The Equality Act 2010 protects owner-trained assistance dogs without any need for certification.
Legal Does Assistance Dog Registry provide legal support?
No, we do not provide legal advice. For legal disputes please contact Citizens Advice or a disability rights solicitor.
