Wetherspoon apologises for guide dog access refusal

A blind customer with their guide dog was escorted from a Wetherspoon pub in Devon, prompting the chain to issue an apology. The incident highlights persistent misunderstanding of guide dog access rights among hospitality staff.

What the law says

Under the Equality Act 2010, guide dogs are working animals with a right to access public premises where the public are normally permitted. Businesses cannot refuse entry to a disabled person and their assistance dog except in genuinely exceptional circumstances, such as safety risks or severe hygiene issues. The onus is on the venue to demonstrate legitimate grounds for refusal.

If this happens to you

If refused access with your guide dog, ask to speak to management and calmly explain the legal requirement. Request the reason in writing if refused. Contact us at the Registry and consider reporting to your local authority's trading standards or the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
