The Equality and Human Rights Commission has warned that JD Wetherspoon's assistance dog policy may violate UK equality law. The pub chain's restrictions on assistance dogs could breach disabled handlers' statutory rights to access public venues with their working animals.
Under the Equality Act 2010, businesses providing services to the public must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, including permitting assistance dogs in areas where the public is normally allowed. Handlers cannot be charged additional fees or required to meet unreasonable conditions for their assistance dog's access. Blanket exclusion policies are unlawful unless a specific exemption applies.
If refused access with your assistance dog at JD Wetherspoon or any venue, request the manager's name and their refusal in writing. Contact the Equality and Human Rights Commission or Citizens Advice to report the incident, and consider filing a complaint with the business's head office.
