Under the Equality Act 2010, assistance dogs are not considered pets and handlers have the legal right to access public premises with their working dog. Businesses cannot refuse entry based on the presence of an assistance dog unless the dog poses a genuine safety risk or causes substantial disruption. Refusals without valid reason constitute disability discrimination.
Document the refusal with date, time, shop name and staff details. Report the incident to the Assistance Dog Registry and contact your dog's training organisation for support. Consider escalating to the shop's management and the local authority if the business refuses to rectify their policy.
