The Equality Act 2010 protects disabled people and their assistance dogs. An assistance dog is trained to perform tasks that help with a person’s disability, and that training requirement is the heart of the law.
An emotional support animal helps through presence, companionship and comfort. That support is real and it matters, but because it does not involve trained task work, UK law does not treat it the same way. In practice:
Be careful with American advice. The United States has ESA housing and travel rules that do not exist in UK law. Many “ESA registration” sites are American and sell certificates implying rights you will not have here.
This is the part most people get wrong, and it can change your rights completely. Ask: is my dog trained to do something specific because of my disability?

This is about tasks, not diagnosis. If your disability is anxiety, PTSD, depression or autism and your dog is trained to perform tasks that help you, your dog may well be an assistance dog. Many people assume a mental health condition automatically means “emotional support animal”. That is not correct. The dog may be trained by a charity or by you, as owner-trained assistance dogs are recognised in the UK.

What it does not give you: legal access rights, official recognition, a licence, or any guarantee a business, landlord or airline must accept your animal. Avoid any provider that claims otherwise.
This is where UK ESA owners most often need support. Landlords have discretion over animals, and many will consider a request presented clearly and calmly. Documentation will not compel a landlord to agree, but it makes a considered request far easier than having nothing to show.
If you are taken ill, a card and profile carrying your animal’s details and an emergency contact means someone can arrange care quickly.
Be realistic. UK and European airlines generally do not recognise emotional support animals and mostly treat them as pets. Always check the carrier’s own policy before booking, and do not rely on any registration to secure travel.
