Supporting UK Assistance Dog Handlers Since 2020
Assistance Dog Registry · United Kingdom
Assistance Dog Registry is a UK voluntary registry and resource for assistance dog handlers. Since 2020 we have supplied over 20,000 assistance dog ID cards and supported thousands of handlers across the United Kingdom, both owner-trained and charity-trained. We are not a government body, and registration is not a legal requirement: a UK assistance dog is protected by the Equality Act 2010 by virtue of its training and the support it provides, whoever trained it. What we provide is practical, honest help: clear identification, accessible rights information, and tools that make everyday access smoother.
What We Do
For five years we have focused on one thing: making daily life easier for UK assistance dog handlers.
- Clear identification: photo ID cards, NFC smart cards and online profiles that let a handler communicate their dog's status quickly and calmly.
- Honest rights information: plain-English guidance on the Equality Act 2010 and what it does (and does not) require, so handlers and businesses both know where they stand.
- Support for owner-trainers: the handlers who train their own assistance dogs and are too often left without recognition. We welcome them.

Our Honest Position
There is no official government register for assistance dogs in the UK, and you do not legally need to register your dog. We will always tell you that plainly. What a voluntary registration with us gives you is convenience and confidence. A card and profile that make access smoother and reduce the awkward questions, especially for handlers of owner-trained dogs and those with non-visible disabilities. We would rather be the honest voice in this space than promise rights we cannot grant.
Who We Are
Assistance Dog Registry is run by the ADR Team, a small UK-based team dedicated to assistance dog handlers. Our content and guidance are produced and reviewed by the ADR Team, drawing on five years of direct experience supporting thousands of handlers and ongoing research into UK assistance dog law and access rights.
