A blind student was refused service at a Tesco store despite being accompanied by their guide dog. This constitutes unlawful discrimination under UK disability rights legislation.
What the law says
Under the Equality Act 2010, assistance dogs including guide dogs have a legal right of access to public spaces where the public is normally permitted. Retailers cannot refuse entry to a disabled person because they have an assistance dog, except in very limited circumstances where the dog poses a genuine risk to health or safety. Tesco's refusal was unlawful discrimination.
If this happens to you
Report the incident to Tesco head office and request a formal written apology and undertaking to train staff on assistance dog rights. If Tesco does not respond satisfactorily, contact the Equality and Human Rights Commission or consider making a complaint to your local trading standards office.
