What the law says
Under the Equality Act 2010, landlords and letting agents must make reasonable adjustments for disabled tenants, including permitting assistance dogs. Refusing a property because of an assistance dog is unlawful disability discrimination. Handlers have the right to equal access to housing without facing discrimination based on their disability or their dog.
If this happens to you
If a landlord refuses your rental application because of your assistance dog, document everything and contact the Equality and Human Rights Commission or Citizens Advice Bureau. You may have grounds for a discrimination claim, and the landlord may face legal action.
